Golden Gate Bridge District Edit
The bridge operations are overseen by a Board of Directors consisting of appointees from the counties of San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino and Del Norte.
District Operations Edit
In addition to maintaining and operating the bridge, the District also operates a Bus and Ferry System.
District Issues Edit
The District Board voted March 10, 2006, 14-2 to start work on the first phase to identify barrier designs that might be used to prevent suicide jumps. About 20 people jump from the span every year. Over 1,300 people have jumped to their deaths since the bridge opened in 1937.
One April 26, 2006 the Metropolitan Transportation Commission agreed to supply the final $250,000 needed to pay for the study. Marin County has contributed $25,000, the city and county of San Francisco has contributed $100,000, and $18,700 was donated by private citizens and the Psychiatric Foundation of Northern California. Other private sources gave $10,000, according to the district.
The study once it begins, is expected to take two years and will be done in two phases.
