Created February, 18, 1850. The sixth mission in California was established here by Padre Junipero Serra on October 9, 1776, and was named Mission San Francisco de Asis a la Laguna de los Dolores. Private land ownership started after the Mexican Revolution in 1822, and by 1828 there was a small village near the mission known as Yerba Buena. The village grew into a town, which was seized by the United States during the Mexican-American War on July 9, 1846. Lt. Washington Allon Bartlett was named alcalde of the town, and on January 30, 1847 he issued an official proclamation changing the name to "San Francisco". The city was incorporated under United States law on April 16, 1850, and the county became a chartered county under the admission act of September 9, 1850.
San Francisco is both a city and a county.
